The town of Ajax became part of Durham Region in 1974. It is no longer as rural as it once was, as people move further away from Toronto in search of affordable housing, and development increases. Highway 401 runs through Ajax, and connects the town to the GTA.

The Durham Regional Police Service patrols Ajax from its West Division, at 1710 Kingston Rd. in Pickering. The West Division recently reported that its area has more than its share of driving offences, which is not surprising, given the importance of Highway 401.
The headquarters of the Durham Regional Police is in Whitby, at 605 Rossland Rd. East.
The courthouse for Durham Region (which includes communities such as Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Bowmanville, Port Perry, and Uxbridge) is situated at 150 Bond St. East in Oshawa. It is a new and impressive building, housing the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice.
