Scarborough Courthouse

The courthouse for Scarborough is located at 1911 Eglinton Ave. East, near Warden Ave. It is an old and decrepit structure inside a strip mall, similar to the North York courthouse at 1000 Finch Ave. It does not inspire awe or command respect, but the Scarborough courthouse handles more cases in a year than most courthouses in Canada. It is not pretty but it is efficient.

Like its North York counterpart, the Scarborough courthouse conducts trials in almost 200 languages and dialects. The limited number of certified interpreters is a regular headache for the court’s administration.

Superior Court cases from Scarborough are managed in the Superior Court downtown at 361 University Ave.

FAQs

A bad criminal lawyer can be worse than no lawyer at all. Here are the 7 things you should look for in a good criminal defence lawyer.

  • Free consultation. Your lawyer should be willing to offer a free consultation by phone and take some time to explain the process and obtain information from you about your case. A lawyer who wants to be paid before s/he talks to you is more interested in money than in your case.
  • Easy to reach. You want a lawyer who will return your calls and take the time to talk to you. A lawyer who only calls you when s/he wants money is not for you.
  • Experienced. Make sure the lawyer you are thinking of hiring has the knowledge and experience to handle your case.
  • Attentive. Your lawyer should take the time to explain things in a way that you can understand. Especially when it is your first time before the court, there are laws, policies, procedures, options, and outcomes that will be new to you. The initial consultation, before you have hired them or paid money, is a good opportunity to tell: if they won’t spend the time with you to win your business, they won’t do it later when they already have your money.
  • Informative. Your lawyer needs to review the evidence in detail with you and explain what it means, so that you can make informed decisions about your case. The old-school lawyer who says “I’ll handle it” then pressures you to accept a deal s/he has worked out is not the lawyer for you.
  • Fees. You want a lawyer who will be upfront about the likely total cost. An experienced lawyer will have a very good idea about the cost of your case. A fixed fee makes sense in most criminal cases and allows you to have a good idea about what to expect. Beware of lawyers who only charge hourly fees, or who won’t give you an estimate of the likely total cost. Your lawyer should be willing to be flexible about payments and offer payment by e-transfer, credit card or bank draft. Beware of a lawyer who insists on cash.
  • Trust your gut. If you have a good feeling that the lawyer you have just spoken to has taken the time to explain the process, is knowledgeable and communicates clearly, returns your calls, and is transparent about the fees, then trust your gut and sign up. Make sure the lawyer

If arrested, you have the right to remain quiet and exercise it. Speaking or arguing with the police in the absence of the right criminal lawyer in Scarborough can lead to self-incrimination and more troubles. Don’t think that silence is an admission of guilt. Rather, its a smart and strategic move. You can politely state to the police, ‘I wish to remain silent for now and have a talk with my lawyer.’ It can build a strong defence and safeguard your future.

Don’t let the cost deter you, because your future is priceless. Hiring a skilled lawyer, anyhow, costs much less than a conviction. Hiring a criminal lawyer in Scarborough is a legal kaleidoscope, ranging from 1500 for minor cases to about 15000+ for complex ones. It’s also seen that some lawyers charge hourly (200-500), while flat rates are also offered. Many lawyers provide free consultations and discuss the further fee structure. Don’t panic, and consider it an investment in your freedom.

It is a marvellous idea to bring a criminal lawyer from Scarborough to your bail hearing. It is exactly like attaching a legal GPS to navigate your maze. Without one, you may risk missing key arguments and loopholes that could detain you. A skilled criminal lawyer can counter the prosecution’s claims by presenting strong reasons to the judge. He knows how to release you by highlighting your ties to the employment, community, and lack of flight risk. Don’t gamble with your freedom. Seek professional assistance to step out of custody.
