The City of Whitby is the seat for the Region of Durham, as well as the headquarters of the Durham Regional Police Service. While Oshawa has grown larger in size, much of the region’s power lies in Whitby. The Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School board are both located in Whitby. Its GO station was the busiest until the tracks were extended to Oshawa.
The Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health, formerly the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital, is one of the most important medical institutions in the area.
Whitby boasts sister cities in Feldkirch, Austria, as well as its namesake in the UK.
The Whitby Town Hall is at 575 Rossland Rd. East. The headquarters for the Region of Durham is situated next door at 604 Rossland Rd. East.
The Central West Division of the Durham Regional Police Force serves Whitby from its offices at 480 Taunton Rd. East. Important initiatives in this urban division include more police on foot patrol; more responsiveness to the concerns of local businesses; and better road safety, especially for pedestrians in the downtown core of Whitby and Oshawa.
The headquarters of the Durham Regional Police is also in Whitby, at 605 Rossland Rd. East.
The courthouse for Durham Region (which includes communities such as Oshawa, Ajax, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Bowmanville, Port Perry, and Uxbridge) is located at 150 Bond St. East in Oshawa. It is a new and impressive building, housing the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice. The Superior Court used to be located in Whitby, but was replaced by this courthouse.
